Merry Christmas !!!!

I had a wonderful time at the 26th Vintage Clothing Show. A big Thank You! goes out to my hubby and two teens for helping me get ready for this show. It is always a good day but a lot of work too. Not something you can do by yourself, that is for sure !

I have not been in blog land lately ~ I have "gone to the dogs" ~ as my friends say. I have become involved with online dog rescue via Face Book. It is amazing how networking between Rescues, Fosters and Transporters can save dogs and puppies in high kill pounds. My daughter and I are doing our part and will be doing a road trip to NY State on Dec. 29th. We are helping to transport 8 puppies to their foster home where they will be safe and put up for adoption. They were saved from a pound in North Carolina. I will post pictures.

Lazy Days of Summer

Thank you for all the well wishes. I am doing fine but have been told not to lift anything over 10 pounds for 6 weeks (the end of August). Boy that's harder than you think! When you go grocery shopping the bags add up, laundry baskets add up, pet food, kitty litter. . . the list goes on and on. So I'll try and enjoy the lazy days of summer : )

So there you go . . . hang out and don't do chores. I'll try to follow orders, lol.

Cool Breeze and Casual Pets

We have had quite the heat wave in Southern Ontario this week. It actually reached 42 degrees Celcius which is 108 F. That is very unusual for May and too hot for me! It is finally cool enough to open the windows again.

I think we are all enjoying the cool breeze !

Yep, I am a hockey fan. I am Canadian after all! I certainly love cheering for the underdog . . . as stressful as that is, lol. I think the Montreal Canadiens have certainly given it their all this year! Montreal was up against the number one team (1st place in the regular season plays 8th place in the first round of the finals). . . . and they won! How unexpected was that!?! Now Montreal is battling last years Stanley Cup winners. I'm sure every other team in the League would like to see them knock off the Champs too !

A little magic wouldn't hurt either ! I love this vintage photo . . . it calmly says

"Wait . . . I'm not done yet!"

First Blooms in my Garden

I just love May !

In Canada it is the beginning of the best half of the year :)

We have about 500 little seedlings of White Pine, White Spruce and Red Pine planted in our back yard . . . . way back in the tall grass. I hope to convert that area from meadow to forest. You can see a few of the little green tops peeking out above the grass. This is their 3rd summer so I hope they really take off and grow like crazy this year!

My flower garden is starting to have some colour. My cats are thrilled to enjoy some fresh air. I hope to keep them as indoor kitties, as we have coyotes, fishers and owls in our neighbourhood. Not so good for young cats. I'll be putting a hook and eye on my screen door asap. I think they will learn how to slide that door quickly!

My Tulips have survived the nibbling deer . . . so far so good.

My "Snow on the Mountain" is in full bloom. The best kind of snow, lol.

Vintage Buttons and Bling!

I had some fun on the weekend going to a Jewelry sale. The auctioneer I know decided to try something different and have a tag sale instead. I found lots of goodies and the prices were great. I am a big fan of Marcasite and just love this floral bracelet. I lucked out! It is marked Sterling Germany on the back.

I also bought a few bag lots of brooches and pins.

I love the black enamel brooch and earrings set with the pink roses.

The hat pins and shoe clips are fun too !

These little scarf pins were all bagged together in a lot of 25 pins.

I think I will do alright by them : )

I bought the blue set "just because" the glass is so pretty.

I also got a huge lot of buttons at an auction a few weekends ago. I was thrilled to find these Victorian Stag buttons . . . after sorting through the entire lot of +500 buttons I can happily say I have a set of ten deer buttons.

I love cameos ~ real or fake. I bought these at the tag sale and was fortunate to discover that the bracelet is real! It has eight tiny shell cameos, not plastic. Once it was all cleaned up (and no longer solid grey from dust and dirt) I could see the beautiful detail in each hand carved cameo. It is always nice to have the odd surprise! FYI ~ I learned via google that you should oil your shell cameo twice a year to keep it from drying out.

Not Quite what I Expected . . .

You know those sayings . . . "You get what you ask for" and "Careful what you wish for". . . well I take them very seriously. That little feeling that says you'll find what you are looking for happens every so often too. I never ignore it. Well lately I have been dreaming of lovely Steiff Bears.

There is an Antique Market not too far away that I actually didn't know about ~ how could that be!?!?! It is about 45 minutes from my house so I went last Sunday to check it out. It is only open 1 day a week, on Sunday. I had visions of Teddy Bears dancing in my head. I was convinced I was going to find a nice big Steiff Bear for cheap. . . . and I did . . . sort of. I guess I'll need to provide more specific details to "the Universe" next time.

This lovely bear is likely a grand 20 inches when he is standing. He looks like Steiff to me. The thing I wasn't expecting was a tin bear, lol. Mohair would have been nice! This cutie is a big tin sign. It was only $5 though, so yes, I guess I did find a nice big Steiff bear for cheap : )

Pretty Glass Things I Never Use, LOL

Even though my China Cabinet has glass doors it really does get very dusty in there. I guess I really don't ever use these things! I still think they are pretty but . . . rather neglected. Ah well, I guess I am a white dishes type. I will use that cake plate and four little dessert plates the next time I have the gals over for coffee though ~ promise!

I did buy two of these domes at a thrift shop not too long ago. I think I will actually use them! They will be good for protecting food when we eat outside on the deck this summer. Maybe the wasps won't even smell the goodies if they are covered up. For now they display velvet millinery : )

I bought this little creamer at an auction a long time ago. It was in a box lot of odds and sods. I think its beautiful. I should use this creamer at my next coffee too!

This little gal was hidden at the back of my junk cupboard. She is so pretty I don't know how she ended up there. She has found a home in my cabinet too. The puppy reminds me of Cider when she was little. Well that's a good start for spring cleaning : ) What I really want to do next is paint my kitchen : )

I think my favorite "yummy" was this cute Ice Cream Cake.

I bought a wonderful standing bunny for Easter this year. I think he is quite charming.

He looks great with the Easter Egg I received from Monica, The White Bench. We participated in an Easter Swap last year. I still love all your wonderful creations Monica!

My new cats have become best buddies and enjoy being kittens together. Luckily their markings are slightly different so I can tell them apart : )

Beaded Wedding Gowns for the Bride-to-be

Spring always inspires me to update the Wedding Gowns in my Etsy shop. I found two gorgeous gowns last week. Once the sun decides to come back to Southern Ontario I will do a photo-shoot of each gown. These cloudy days create too many shadows and I want my photos to justify these pretties : )

I love the champagne and gold tones with the heavily beaded bodice.

So pretty and such a flattering shade on so many brides-to-be.

The second gown is a lighter shade of cream or ivory with sparkling crystal trim.

Spring has Sprung!

Pets and kids certainly do seem to be keeping me very busy lately. It was March Break for the kids this week in Ontario. What great weather we have had! It feels like May or June right now. I think it might be a bit early to get the sandals out, but I certainly am enjoying it !!!

Don't these Easter eggs look good enough to eat? I found them recently and couldn't resist them. I had to make it clear to my son and daughter that they are not really chocolate. You can buy some too at the Blackbird in Almonte, Ontario. You can visit the Blackbird online as well.

Well a year has just flown by.

Last year at this time Cider was having surgery on her leg.

We are happy to report that today is Cider's 1 Year Anniversary ~ Cancer free : )

My girlfriend from Toronto was visiting a few days ago.

Sidney or "Sid the Kid" as his namesake is called seems to be fitting in very well. Sidney and Holly are still figuring out who will be the top feline. Sidney is currently only half of Holly's size (6 months vs. 1 year). I think he will keep trying for top spot. He is very laid back right now . . . but very determined too. Time will tell how his personality develops.

Ms. Holly wishes all the little bugs that have come to life during the last few days of warm weather were on the inside of the glass. I am fine with the way things are, lol.

More change ~ Double Trouble

As several of you know . . . our older cat Jersey passed away in January. Jersey was 16 years old and had used up many of her 9 lives over the years. Liver problems, eating issues, a Hyperthyroid and old age to name a few of her challenges. Her kidneys decided to retire at the end of January. As sad as it was to put her down . . . we new it was time. She was a good girl and I miss her.

This left our much younger cat Holly without a feline friend. We were informed by the local Humane Society that her brother was in foster care and would likely be available for adoption at the end of February. Last week we brought home Sidney. . . . Yes, as in "Sidney Crosby" for all you Canadian hockey fans :D. Sid the Kid scored the winning overtime goal for the Canadian Olympic Hockey Team. This active little guy will try his best to live up to his name sake.

Looks a lot like his sister ~ don't you think? Double Trouble I guess :D

He is 6 months younger though ~ same mother, different litter.

Their mother is available at the Ottawa Humane Society if anyone is interested in adopting her. She prefers a family without dogs . . . so we chose the brother instead.

As for my wonder pup Cider . . . she can't keep up with all this feline change. Big yawn!

Just let me know when everyone is settled in she says.

Lace and Linen

Many beautiful Lace and Linen Bridal Hankies are available in my Etsy Shop . I just love when vintage hankies retain their original stickers ~ Pure Linen ~ Made in Austria. It doesn't get much better than that!

I also have the most beautiful Net Lace child's gown. It has a tiny separation at the shoulder that I need to mend before I list it . . . but just look at that lace!

Meet and Greet ~ Pet Introductions Continued

Well, the meet and greet (existing dog ~ new cat) has been going quite slowly. Sweet little kitty has very sharp claws . . . . and Cider is not used to young cats that run at turbo speed. "Who me?" says Holly. My ability to trim those tiny little claws is also a work in progress. Holly is doing well using her scratching post, but it doesn't really trim her nails.

So far the meetings have involved me holding Cider's collar and the cat keeping a respectful distance. We have progressed beyond the peeking door technique . . . but I can't hold the dog and use my camera, lol.

I admitted to my daughter this week that I am indeed a bit nervous about the first unrestrained meeting. . . with no leash or collar involved. She assumed I was worried about the kitten (ha!) and recently realized I am actually more worried about the dog. Cider only has experience with declawed, geriatric cats. I think Cider is in for a shock when she discovers that cats do have claws. "OMG!" My daughter exclaimed. . . . "you're more worried about the dog!" Well . . . maybe, I replied. I have seen an upset cat jump on a dog's back before, with all four sets of claws digging in. Not so fun for our canine friends. So . . . slow and steady it goes.

In the mean time Cider likes the new food bowls, new plush and feathery cat toys and bouncing balls with bells : )

Well . . . our new cat was keen to explore today . . . so what's a pet owner to do? "Do you want to meet the dog?" I asked her. I know you know there IS a dog. Likewise the dog knows there is a new cat. They most certainly know ~ even if they haven't met.

So into the cat crate Holly went. I put her up high so she had a good view and would still feel safe. Cider and I have been reviewing our obedience training for the last few days to make sure she has that sit/stay in good form. Can you see Holly peeking out the side of the cat crate?

I wish I could see Holly's face in this photo . . . .Wowza ~ what big ears you have!

What a good sit-stay, Cider.

Let's go back to playing with the 7 pounder for today. Much more relaxing.

Holly's feline kennel cough is gone now so we have been working on introductions for the last few days. All the info I have read online about introducing new pets says to focus on one pet introduction at a time. We have a cat and a dog. Cider is our 80 pound dog. We decided to start small ~ with our little 7 pound cat. She's 15 years old and the living room is one of her favorite places to hang out . It is quiet and has lots of sunbeams from 9:00am to 3:00pm. This information was quickly shared with the new arrival.

Today they made some progress.

I'll let you sit on my chair with "my pillow" . . . .

If I get first choice of any sunbeam I want.

OK . . . . I'm easy to get along with.

Relaxing in the proximity of the new pet is considered a very good sign. Jersey is right below this chair ~ so they are very close together.

Etsy Shop Update ~ Vintage Coats and Faux Fur

Back to work after the holidays ~ All the decorations are down and put away. It was nice to get back to work. I listed six coats today in my Ciderantiques Etsy Shop . I also paid a visit to the Background Fairy after seeing all her pretty backgrounds in blogland. I am having fun playing around with all the pretty options. Thank you Background Fairy!

The coats and capes have all passed local inspection :D

I know you're in there . . . . can't you come out to play? I heard you were suppose to be over your kennel cough within two weeks. You have lots of neat toys in there I would like to check out.

Not yet I'm afraid. . . back to the Vet this afternoon. I think I need some special eye drops. I have health insurance for 6 weeks from the Humane Society . . . so that helps mom out. My eyes are still quite sensitive and likely contagious to other cats, so the "meet and greet" will have to be delayed a little while yet. You can still come visit me though. I like talking to you.

I like this room too!

I get to move around the house a bit to keep me from getting bored.

My sneezing is almost gone and I really do want to play . . . this toy is my favourite ! I hope to be all better soon.

The moon will be brighter and higher than usual.

Canadian Winter means Flexible Travel Plans

The best laid plans . . . . are usually altered. Today we intended to travel to Bowmanville . . . a little town east of Toronto to visit some extended family and friends. In the middle of the night we could hear the clatter of freezing rain hitting our windows. Have you ever heard it? It is really something actually. Sounds a bit like a frozen car wash : ) and turns your windows into ripples of ice.

The result this morning was all the windows on the south and west side of our home were absolutely covered in ice. It looks pretty but it certainly is not practical for driving. When you see "Severe Freezing Rain and Ice Pellets" warnings , followed by expected "Snow Flurries" it is best to stay home. Snow over ice is not safe to drive on at all. Your tires have nothing to grab.

We have Christmas presents, games, treats and goodies to enjoy . . . so a quiet day at home is a safe and comfy choice.

This is my lovely Wee Scone Teddy Bear from Scotland. He came with dark chocolate spicy ginger cookies and marsh mellow snowballs. Great with a cup of tea : )

The warm glow from the candles makes it all cozy.

It should melt away by tomorrow I hope : )

So comfort food is certainly in order . . . the best homemade apple pie you have ever tried ~ thank you to my neighbour Michelle !

Somewhere out there is a pool hut and a pool.

It will be a few months before we get back to swimming, lol.

Have a safe and cozy holiday and do not travel if you don't need to. There is always the 2010 Winter Olympics, hosted by Canada in February, to organize parties around. We can gather with family and friends to cheer on Team Canada and our favourite athletes!

She looks like a Birman mix to us. . . . known to be friendly and calm, and as loyal as a dog. We thought friendly and calm would be perfect since we have two senior pets already (a 15 year old cat and our dog Cider will turn ten in July).

Holly is estimated to be 10 months old. Our goal over the holidays is to get Holly on our human schedule. She certainly did sleep most of the time at the humane society. . . . which did work to our advantage, as no one even noticed her. We didn't show up until 1:00 in the afternoon on Saturday and the place was packed with potential adopters by then. I am sure she would have been chosen by someone else if she had peeked out of her cardboard sleeping box.

The only reason we asked to see her was because her chart details said she was fostered with 3 large dogs and a family that had children. Sounds perfect! When she was removed from her hiding spot by the shelter volunteer we were stunned to see such big beautiful blue eyes and chocolate brown markings. I expected an all beige cat . . . as she was completely curled up and hidden, with only a bit of her back showing. We fell for her pretty fast.

They said she had only been at the H.S. for a short time (and was in foster care for a month before that). I guess the shelter was scary for her (thus the hiding) and we were told she had not eaten a thing in 24 hours. I was quite happy to see her finally looking hungry. She ate like a ravenous lion last night, around 11:00pm, which likely also fueled her energy. She loves playing with her toys. She was relocated to her kitty kennel around 3:00am this morning, for some sleep time.

She has done everything right. Used her litter box, eventually ate some food and slept well in her kitty crate (after lots of exploring and checking out the tops of all our tall dressers). This gal can jump! I will certainly be taking the tree down early after Christmas, before she gets to explore the rest of our home. It is recommended that we wait two weeks before she meets Cider or Jersey. She needs to adjust to our home first and recover from her shelter cough symptoms before meeting other animals.

The Humane Society gave us lots of suggestions for introducing new pets. I welcome suggestions from my blogging friends too! Have you introduced new animals to the family?

Old World Santas

Are you a Snowman, a Santa or an Angel decorator? I certainly prefer the Old World Santas. Victorian, Woodland or just a little different. Here are some of my favorite Santas.

This is my sentimental Santa. I bought him in 2004 at the Christmas Store in Rothenburg, Germany.

This little guy is my smallest Santa. Only a few inches tall. I love his coach light.

This is my mended many times Santa. He always falls over and his nose has been repaired almost every year. His boots have been fractured and re-glued. The worse he gets the more I love him. He makes me laugh!

Oh, almost forgot this guy . . . he is big too. I love his felt outfit and jingle bells.

Cider says Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays ~ Only 2 more weeks to go until Christmas. I have most of my shopping done and the Christmas cards are ready to be mailed tomorrow. I actually feel like I will be able to avoid the last minute rush this year. . . . but then again . . . relaxing is usually what leads to the last minute rush, lol.

My hubby photo-shopped a Santa Hat on my favourite picture of Cider. It turned out very well I think! She is not very co-operative when it comes to hats, lol. My husband even erased the blue harness and red leash. The original picture is on the side of my blog roll, for comparison.

It's a Snow Day!

It's the first "Snow Day" of the year. The kids are thrilled because the weather is so bad that the school buses are cancelled and they get to stay home. We will likely decorate the Ginger Bread House early and have some fun indoors. The wind is really gusty and the visibility is low . . . so no driving today.

Last week we took some pictures for our Christmas letter. Cider is usually up to silly tricks when all this is going on. She has been like that every year, since she was a puppy. I think she knows the Santa hats equal silly poses and giggles. She always makes the kids laugh . . . so we get natural smiles.

She is jumping around being goofy here . . . . and generated lots of laughs.

I found this picture online yesterday . . . the ten best pictures around the world are published every day. Must be a fun job to do the choosing! This one was taken by Mathieu Beanger. An amazing picture of a Polar Bear shaking off water after a swim.

Vintage Bonnets ~ Etsy Update

Each year I try to come up with an interesting Christmas display for my Artist Teddy Bears. This year I put all my "Brendie Bears" in a red Christmas sleigh. My Aunt, Brenda Power, is a very talented and creative woman. She makes miniature Teddy Bears, Bunnies and Jewellery just to name a few of her talents. You can visit Brenda's blog here . These bears are all ready for the snow . . . not so sure I am, LOL.

This week I will be listing some wonderful children's hats and baby bonnets in my Old Soul Bears Etsy shop. They look great on display or can be worn by Dolls or Teddy Bears.

I just love the ribbon work on this one!

The silk is still in perfect condition.

This blue bonnet will be hard to list . . . I have avoided listing it for a year now . . . and it didn't seem to make it to the vintage clothing show either.

The ruffles on this Victorian bonnet are in great shape, as is the white on white embroidery.

Well . . . I should get back to my listings.

I have posted some photos from the 25th Vintage Clothing Show, in the Ballroom at the Chateau Laurier. A heartfelt Thank You to my family for helping me get ready for this big event and to my Mom for volunteering to help out this week. She flew in all the way from Nova Scotia. No one can exhibit at these shows without a lot of assistance. It certainly is appreciated.

The Ballroom room is truly stunning . . . from the carpet all the way up to the ceiling.

Packed and Ready for the Vintage Show

We are packed and ready . . . one Van and one rented U-Haul. I guess I do have a lot of stuff, lol! Those garment racks and wicker shelves do take up a lot of space. I also decided to bring my Dress Form this year. She takes up a lot of room too. I hope she shows off the dresses and coats well and earns her keep, lol.

My hubby updated my business card (we added Etsy and my twitter address too). This pretty image is on my Business Card. I think she is sweet!

Hope the weather isn't too sunny tomorrow . . . so there will be a good attendance at the show. I'll let you know how it goes : )

Vintage Hats, Coats, Scarves and More!

I have two great white wicker shelves that I hope to take to the Vintage Clothing show this year. Just 5 days until November 15th. I'm wondering if I could put one on the roof of each car? They are really light . . . the problem is likely making it into the underground parking garage at the Chateau Laurier Hotel. Now that would be fun . . . being 1 inch too short of the required clearance. Maybe I'll check on those height limitations, LOL.

Here is another preview of some items I will be taking with me. I have a large selection of wool and mohair hats. Beret's and Beanie style too. Great for winter!

My daughter and I have had fun co-ordinating the tags I bought on Etsy with each item.

They come in all shapes and sizes. Some are absolutely works of Art. So pretty!!!! I use the big ones for labelling my coat racks etc. That way I get to keep them.

My American neighbour delivered 2 commercial grade garment racks yesterday. Thanks so much!!! I bought them online at Target in the USA. They will ship packages as a "gift" to another address, so I had them shipped to a US location. It is amazing how expensive they are locally. Thanks so much Cathy for bringing them up to Canada for me! I need strong racks for heavy coats and these new racks are perfect.

I'm getting there. My basement booth/display is almost done. I wish I could just wiggle my nose and move it all Sunday morning, LOL. I hope it all fits in two vehicles! My mom in flying in from Nova Scotia tomorrow to visit and to help me at the sale. My goal is to be pretty much ready before she arrives. So . . . back to work I go : )

Happy Halloween!

~~~ A True Story from my Childhood ~~~

When I was about 10 years old my cousins (2 girls and 2 boys) moved into a beautiful stone farm house on a 100 acre property. It was the typical center hall plan layout with a staircase in the middle of the home and it had a hidden staircase at the back that went directly to the kitchen. I am an only child and loved spending the summer with my cousins. I got to be the 5th sibling. As kids, we just loved all the different ways to run around that house and play hide and seek.

The house was truly beautiful in the daylight, with the large windows on all sides and deep window wells. The gorgeous antique glass seemed too pretty to cover up with window covering. Since there were no immediate neighbours in the country the windows were left uncovered. At night the property was always extremely dark however. . . . and the shadows from all the old maple trees moving in the wind became quite spooky.

From the very first day my relatives moved into that home everyone felt that the front parlour room to the right of the main stairs had a very odd feeling. It felt occupied. Taken. Non welcoming. No one wanted to lay claim to that room. Very unusual for a large family.

It was immediately called "The Nothing Room". Since old Victorian homes don't really have basements all the non essential boxed items, that usually would have been delegated to a basement, went to the Nothing Room instead. It took a long time for those boxes to get unpacked. They were stacked and forgotten for months. The room had a pull out couch eventually, but no one ever wanted to use it. Even at Christmas time when there was a shortage of places for guests to sleep . . .no one wanted to sleep in that room. Not even the adults or any of their four cats.

My cousins family eventually began to inquire about the history of the house and who had lived there previously. We learned that a woman had indeed died in the parlour and under suspicious circumstances.

The following summer . . . the previous owners came to visit and asked if it would be possible for them to have a picnic at the rear of the property . . . where the ashes of their mother had been buried in a Maple tree. They also wanted permission to return every year on her birthday. Sure enough, they confirmed that their mother had died in the Nothing Room.

After the family's first birthday picnic my four cousins and I ran all around the 100 acre property looking for Mrs. Usher's Tree. We found it eventually. It was a hallowed out tree (rather like the one above) and marked with a small plaque.

From then on we felt a little more at ease about the house. Just knowing who "the presence" belonged to made us all feel a bit more comfortable. We still didn't ever sleep on the pull out couch though. That was for Mrs. Usher !

Although I have never seen a ghost I can certainly say I believe that you can feel a ghostly presence. What do you believe? Do you have a story to share?

Ottawa 25th Vintage Clothing Sale ~ Nov 15, 2009

The 25th Ottawa Vintage Clothing show is just around the corner. It is on Sunday November 15, 2009. Three weeks until the big day! I am a vendor this year at the show. I will be in booth #11 ~ in the Ballroom, at the Chateau Laurier Hotel, downtown Ottawa.

A few weeks before the show I start to think . . . do I have enough? I want to go on a spending frenzy and buy more, more, more! But alas, after looking at all my treasures I can conclude that I do indeed have enough. My husband concurs!!! The hard part is deciding what not to bring, LOL. For now, . . . I'll focus on my favourites.

Two rhinestone bows adorn this royal blue gown. These are oldies . . . with the "C" clasp at the back.

This gown flows so beautifully.

As many of you know . . . I have a love for lace. I think I will bring less than I did last year . . . but I will still have some beautiful Victorian pieces to offer.

The aprons and vintage lingerie did very well last year. I will sort through them all and make my final selections this week.

Edwardian lace is just amazing. These old undergarments make wonderful doll dresses ~ if you can bear to cut them!

This all white 1950s vintage Prom Dress will be the Belle of the Ball at the show.

Red and black can be difficult to photograph I find. This black beauty is stunning . . . I hope you can see the detail in the photos.

Just perfect for Christmas or New Years Eve.

I have 25 vintage coats this year ! Can't wait to get my new garment racks delivered.

Plaid is really in this year. I have dozens of plaid items ~ coats, shawls, scarves, dresses and skirts.

I love the pattern on this coat. Very 60s.

I have lots of casual dresses and skirts too.

My Silpada Party

Two posts today : ). I had my gal pal party last Friday and it went very well. My friend is a rep for Silpada Designs. You can see the catalogue online at www.silpada.ca. I had about 20 ladies over for wine, snacks and bling : ) It was a great evening.

I can't believe I didn't take a single picture! I had my camera ready but was too busy having fun and being a hostess. I guess it is better not to be flashing the camera at your guests : )

I wish I had taken a few pictures though.

I am late with my greetings . . . that's what happens when the computer is disconnected and the painting bug takes over. I have painted 3 rooms and a dresser in the last 7 days. I ordered glass knobs on ebay for the dresser I am refinishing. They might arrive this week. Can't wait : )

Decorating Mode ~ Paint, Appliques and Quilts

Look what I found at Value Village (thrift shop) recently. A pretty pink and green quilt with matching pillow shams. How could I resist? I like roses and my daughter loves stripes. We both liked the bright green accent color.

The quilt purchase soon lead to buying a green throw . . . .

and the new favorite color has lead to the discussion of paint chips.

We'll see . . . so much for the bargain, LOL.

I have been working on refinishing an old dresser that will be quite pretty when it is done. I am painting it white and added a little texture to the front with scrolls and wooden appliques. I will add crystal knobs when it is done. I hope to have it finished next week. I am having an evening get-together for my neighbours and girlfriends. My daughter's room will be the designated coat room . . . so the pressure is on to finish the dresser. I have a full week to go, so I think I am OK for time. Here is a peek of my work so far.

It has a nice shape though.

I have also been selling and buying stuff on my Kijiji. Have you ever used that site? I love it. It is for local items that are too big to mail. I sold the kids swing set (not used for several years now) and used the money to buy this beautiful cream Wing Back Chair. I was very happy with my "trade."

I also found this pretty love seat for peanuts and delegated our old one to the basement. It certainly is far cheaper than buying new. With teenagers and multiple pets it is a better way to go.

This picture is for Brenda : ) You mentioned you were looking for a nice neutral color. We just painted the bathroom "Alencon Lace" . . . love the name by the way. It goes with any color scheme and provides a nice soft background.

So . . . I think I am in decorating mode or something! Must be the nesting instinct before winter. It is nice to get the painting jobs done while I can still open the windows. Enjoy the Fall while it lasts :)

Fall Flowers and Shop Update Pending

I love sunflowers. Our kids plant them every Spring and they look great every Fall.

I think this was our best specimen this year : )

It was back to work for me today taking pictures of lace hankies and pretty dresses. I think my camera skills for close-ups need some practise after the summer, lol. Maybe it is the rainy weather and grey lighting . . . or I really am out of practise! I will have to try again tomorrow.

This dress is just amazing and really should be shown in better light.

It is too small for my size 8 dress form . . . so my daughter may have to model it for me later today.

They certainly knew how to make a pretty party dress in the 1950s.

I have some silk hanky holders and wedding hankies ready to update the Bridal Section of my Etsy shop.

I like the net-lace hankies the best.

The Cosmos is enjoying the nice warm Fall weather. Ther isn't much colour across the fields yet. Maybe next week.

I am still looking into the idea of a brick and mortar shop but will likely set my sights on the Spring. It takes a while to save some money, build some partnerships and finish a Business Plan. I'll keep working on it though : )

Terry Fox Run ~ A single Dream, A world of Hope

I am sure you know of Terry Fox . . . even if you are not Canadian. Terry became famous for his Marathon of Hope ~ a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research, which Fox ran with one prosthetic leg.

He is considered one of Canada's greatest heroes and is celebrated internationally every September as people participate in the Terry Fox Run, the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research. Terry's goal in 1980 was to raise $1 from every Canadian as he ran across the country. To date, more than $400 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world.

Each year Canadian children participate in school hosted Terry Fox runs. This year the run is on Friday, September 25th, 2009. The same day as my son's 13th Birthday.

I will make my donation this year in honour of Deb's mom (Land of Nod Studio's) and Carolyn's Dad (Draffin Bears) . A cure for Cancer is within our reach.

Doing some Homework

So what's a girl to do when her hubby is away for a week on business? . . . go shopping for shops! I guess we'll find out if he reads my blog or not, LOL. Are you out there Steve????

Anyways . . . today I stopped by 68 Mill Street in Almonte to take a peek. It is the store with the cream front and bay window about half way up this block (to the left of the red one).

A lovely old post office with a clock tower is across the street . . . quite charming.

Here's the front door . . . . I am told the new owner gets to choose any colour(s) they want for repainting the front.

The Bay window would certainly make a nice store front . . . and the neighbour to the right is nicely done. Bright and cheery.

Here is a view from the inside looking out. Needless to say fresh paint, new flooring and shelving would be required. I spent the day wondering around main street chatting with other store keepers. They were very friendly and encouraging ~ Thank you! I do know some of them already . . . as I have been a shopper in this town for a while.

There is new development in the works too. Just down the street they are re-doing one of the larger store fronts. Looks like it will be quite impressive. The town also has funding from the goverment to develop a walking path/picnic area beside the Mississippi River, from one end of Mill Street to the other.

A fun day full of inquiries . . . and perhaps more questions than answers : )

Almonte, Ontario

There is a cute little town near by called Almonte. It has a sweet little shop for rent that I just may check out this week. It is located on Mill street and is already surrounded by Vintage, Antique and Gift stores. A very pretty little town.

I keep looking at this lovely, but empty, litte store. So . . . I put a call in to the agent. I have often thought about having my own shop and just may look into that a bit more this week. It's only 20 minutes from my home . . . so quite workable. Stay tuned . . .

I must be thinking mid-life or something! My 44th B-day is today. That sounds very mid life to me. Not so thrilled about that. My "little girl" just started High School this week and my baby turns 13 in two weeks. Where did the time go? I think people buy fast cars to try and race against time. I guess this is more of a boy/muscle car . . . but I like the candy apple red : )

I guess I'll go get a hair cut and buy a candy apple instead. That's more within my budget, LOL.

Montreal is only an hour and a half from Ottawa. We hadn't been there in ages, so we decided to go for the weekend.

We didn't buy any Art though . . . too many choices maybe. There was certainly lots to look at but I wasn't sure which one to pick. My husband loves to paint . . . so he says he will try and paint one of our photos : )

The kids go back to school on September 1st. The summer has flown by. One more big event before school starts . . . The Jonas Brothers concert on August 31st. I'll get my teenie bopper hats ready, LOL. Then its back to work, honest.

New Kid in Town

This fluffy guy came for a visit. His name is Harry Potter. Harry/Hairy it all works, LOL. Isn't he gorgeous! A pure white Samoyed. He enjoyed the pool area but wasn't too keen on getting wet.

A self proclaimed Life Guard too.

He made sure everyone played nicely with no excessive splashing.

Harry really was not very interested in getting that pretty coat wet.

He just came from the Spa don't you know : )

Found the sun : ) in Picton, Ontario

If the sunshine won't come to us . . . . we will go to the sun : ). My dad lives in Picton (Prince Edward County), Ontario. It has proven itself in the last 15 years as an ideal location for vineyards. They are all doing very well. We visited several wineries and cheese factories. The two go together I guess! Certainly enjoyed the nice weather and pretty outdoor cafes.

Rain, Rain, Go Away !

What a weird July we are having here in southern Ontario. We have had rain just about every day this month . . . and when it didn't rain in the day it surely rained at night. It is hard to plan your day around that. Especially with kids.

My Boston Ivy is certainly happy and will be consuming my entire house soon. If I don't post again soon . . . . assume it won ! It has reached the roof line now. The shrubs are so large it looks like a tropical Rain Forest. I do cut them back frequently . . . . really I do. I am losing the battle though.

We even have fog most nights because there is so much moisture in the air. Little did I know I live in the tropics (without the heat, however).

I have been rather lazy this month with my postings and Etsy store updates. I will try to do better in August : ) Hope you are having more sun and better weather than we are.

Better than Yoga for Stretching

I must say staining a deck makes you stretch a lot ! It is too hard on the knees to kneel and you have to move too frequently to use a towel . . . so the stand, lean and stretch method is the fastest. I also had to paint the white trim on the covered part. Stretch up . . . Stretch down : ) Better than Yoga.

We have had so much rain lately (note the green grass) that this has been a two week project. It needed two coats but it is finally done. Thanks to my helper : )

My Nanny's birthday was yesterday. She would have been 95. The Lillies in my garden were transplanted from her flower garden. Still going strong, year after year : )

Unwanted Attention

We had some unwanted attention last Saturday night. My cast iron bunny was the only witness it seems. Unfortunately I can't get him to tell me what he saw. Around 12:30am some vandals decided to ring our door bell (daaa?????) and then smash my nice stone planters on my walkway.

I tried some "Gorilla Glue" to repair the damage, but it just didn't look right so I went out and bought some new planters today. I really liked my old planters . . . but I am thankful they were not thrown through my front door or living room window. I bought some light fibreglass ones today. They can't do any damage when airborne.

You can see from the muddy foot print on my porch that the thug was pretty big.

I like having a big dog! She looks nice and calm in all my pictures but trust me . . . she won't let anyone mess with her mum. Here she is . . . shortly after our scare . . . getting lots of "good girl" pets.

P.S. We do live in a good neighbourhood. Really. Just some stupid teenagers carrying out their twisted idea of fun. My husband and I had a long chat about that with our own soon to be teenagers.

New Driver !

My neighbor has 2 boys a few years older than our kids. He said they should be able to safely operate a riding lawn mower . . . long before they ever get anywhere near his cars! We thought that sounded like great advice. So, our 14 year old daughter learned how to use our riding lawn mower last weekend. She just did the flat part between the trees and practised turning.

Princess Lace Gown and more . . .

This Edwardian Gown is a beauty. I just love it. I have listed it on eBay . . . ending this Friday. I decided I just couldn't limit a posting to five pictures. Etsy really needs to re-think that. For really special items I like the option of posting up to 24 pictures : ). Yep, I used them all!

I have had the dress since last Fall . . . when I worked at the 3 day Edwards Estate Sale. I have enjoyed having it, but must move it along ("Selling is part of the process" my husband reminds me ~ LOL).

It has a Flocked Velvet Train ~ with a Chiffon Ruffled edge.

It is so small that my size 8 dress form could not model it for us. I would guess it is size 0.

It has a solid pink lining, with a light Chiffon lining above that.
The top layer is Princess Lace.

The train gathers beautifully and extends for about 24 inches.

The Net Lace is still strong ~ no breaks, rips or tears in the mesh.

Amazing for a 100 year old gown.

I was told by the family that this gown belonged to Catherine Wilson - wife of W.C. Edwards (1844 - 1921). Mr. Edwards was a prominent Canadian Business man (of Lumber Mills) and a Parliamentarian. Edwards served as a member of Parliament from 1891 to 1900, after which he was appointed to the Canadian Senate upon the recommendation of Sir Wilfrid Laurier (the seventh Prime Minister of Canada). The Edwards lived a life of elegance and refinement. I am sure Mrs. Edwards was the belle of the ball in this gown!

This prominent family once owned the Victorian Estate located at 24 Sussex Drive ~ now the residence of the Prime Minister of Canada.

Another well know lady owned this gown. Her name was Elizabeth Edwards. She was a world traveller and worked for UNICEF for many years. I purchased many of her dresses.

The fabric is actually hand painted. So much detail !

This gown is a more reasonable size. A size 4 - 6 instead of a zero.

I imagine it being worn by a Ballroom Dancer. The fabric sways so nicely.

Hope you are having lovely weather in your part of the world. There is only one more week (and a bit) of school for my kids and then it is summer holidays. June 25th is their last day. I have lots to get done before then . . . the count down is on, LOL.

Victorian Tea Party

This little Nippon Tea Set is so sweet . . . it has a matching cookie platter and plates.

I think Italian Lace is so pretty! This one is a beauty.

My Favorite tea set has 40 pieces ~ luncheon plates, dessert plates and cups and saucers. The teapot is very small though . . . so we'll have to be patient.

The cups have the cutest little feet . . . hard to see here but each cup has three tiny feet.

I do have lots of other tea sets so I am sure I can find a larger tea pot if needed, LOL.

Silk Wedding Gown and May Flowers

I found this vintage "lovely" recently . . . and wished I had found it about twenty years ago! Wow . . . pure silk and a designer label. My wedding gown (not the one below) was Satin (aka polyester) and cost darn near a $1,000.00. It was a mass produced "Sweet Heart Gown." I really don't think it was worth it either. I can say that now, LOL. Ah well . . . . Dresses certainly seem to have gone up in quality and down in price since I was married in the early 90s.

Lucky for the current brides-to-be!

We didn't have eBay or Etsy back then either . . . so there weren't many options for buying resale. I would have though !

I was married in May and we had Lilacs throughout our reception.

They do smell wonderful : ) I cut these from my garden on the weekend and they are still going strong.

The wedding dress has a built in crinoline for a Princess look.

It has miniature buttons at the back and a large bow (which is removable) if the bride prefers.

The four foot train bustles up nicely.

I love the pearls, sequins and lace detail : )

Grand Opening ~ 2nd Etsy Shop

I have decided to open a second Etsy shop! I will showcase my handmade teddy bears and related vintage treasures in the Old Soul Bears shop. I have listed several items already and hope to have a few dozen items available by the end of the week.

This sweet little tea set would look great with your dolls or teddy bears.

I will have lace in both shops . . . and will focus on vintage doll/bear size clothing and collars in the new shop.

This little tin must be close to 100 years old. Is says "Leave them alone" on one side and "They'll come home" on the other side. Very cute !

" All Done "

Those are two words we were waiting to hear. Cider had a follow - up appointment today at the Vet . . . and he said you are ALL DONE !!!! Wooo Hooo : ) Cider actually knows those words, because we would say "all done" after every bandage change. Well , to hear a Vet say those words was just thrilling : ) Two months and 3 days later, but who's counting, LOL? She wiggled and smiled all the way back to the car !

Cider's fur has almost completely grown back (it was shaved up to her armpit). Most importantly her tumor is gone and the surgery site on her leg has healed nicely. I love looking at that straight/flat leg. Shake a Paw is a fun game again.

No more cone ~ No more bandages

She looks tired in this photo because we just came back from a nice long walk : )

Casey's Book

We made a Scrap Book this weekend and filled it with photos of our cat Casey. He was 20 years old when he passed away last March. My daughter still misses him a lot. We finally got all our supplies in order and had a big scrap booking session last Saturday. We bought hearts, butterflies, colored papers, rice paper, stickers and cute sayings. We made a total of 18 pages!

Just about all 18 pictures show Casey sleeping or being carried, LOL.

He was an old boy after all.

Making the book really did make my daughter feel a lot better.

She was smiling as she worked.

The placement of all the Tinker Bell stickers makes me smile.

Maybe Casey earned some wings and can play with Tink now.

I washed these pretty hankies yesterday ~ they were very clean to begin with, but they iron better when they are a bit damp. It doesn't take long to give them a quick press. They are so pretty!

Vintage Gowns

Here are some of the Vintage Gowns I will be listing shortly. This pretty pink Tulle Prom Dress would also make a lovely Bridesmaid Dress ~ in a Vintage themed Wedding.

A sweet little lace jacket would work well with the Strapless Dress.

Perhaps I should list them together : )

The dress has multiple layers of tulle in soft pale pink.

This white gown is so pretty. I think it is for a taller gal, however. Or someone that can manage high heels. My daughter is standing on a 7 inch wooden stool, LOL.

I picture a Bride at an Outdoor Wedding in the Caribbean . . . white sand and ocean breezes.

I found this lovely dress at the Vintage Clothing Show I went to last weekend.

It just needs a gentle soak and then I will list it on Etsy.

So pretty with the silk, organdy, embroidery and raised floral detail.

Definitely worth a tiny bit of TLC.

Cider update: Our dog Cider is doing very well. She either has the bandage off or the cone off. We keep rotating. Her healed leg is still thin new skin and can't be "cleaned" constantly like she seems to want to do. It has been 2 months after all ~ I am sure she thinks it needs a good wash. The daily cleanings by humans apparently do not count, LOL.

Happy Mother's Day Mom! Here is a great picture of my Mom with one of her furry babies. She rescued him from a rain storm many years ago (when he was a tiny lost kitten) and he has stuck like glue ever since, LOL. He knows a good mom was found that day : )

I am off to "The Capital's Clothing Show" this afternoon with my daughter : ). The show is a mix of vintage and new ~ keeps us both happy! I did however break my big toe helping out at a huge Tool Auction last week, UG. A pair of large metal table clamps fell and hit my foot. I guess I will take a cane to the show and hobble around for one quick peek. I have been looking forward to this show for weeks and do not want to miss it. I have certainly learned the lesson of Hard-Toe Steel Boots.

Antique Lace, Ribbon Work and Bridal Themes

I found this sign at a local shop and decided I wanted to bring it home. We all like to ~ Dream ~ I will hang it up in my Guest Bedroom/Vintage Clothing Room for inspiration.

I gave this antique net lace a gentle soak over the weekend and it came out beautifully. I have about 15 pieces that appear to have been part of the most stunning dress. It is an absolute shame that someone chopped it all up. I see no damage on the individual pieces, so I think this is all scissor work. I wonder if the guilty party had any clue about the value of a Net Lace Gown in MINT condition. Such a shame.

I tried putting it all on my kitchen table to see how much of it was remaining. Not enough to play Humpty Dumpty I am afraid. I guess it will have to be used in combination with a new creation or a restoration of some other gown.

The silk ribbon work is gorgeous. There are many talented ladies on Etsy that could surely make this into something formal again.

The bottom portion is still intact as a full skirt. It could be the bottom of a new gown or perhaps a doll dress, or even a little flower girl dress. Wouldn't that be sweet!

I also have over 120 inches of vintage wedding veil net. Pretty Tambour embroidery.

I have some vintage lingerie to list this week too. Do you know any Brides-to-be? I seem to have a Bridal theme this week : )

I also have two vintage wedding gowns that I need to finish repairing . . . before the weather gets too nice! I will aim for Friday . . . . . Blogs are a good way to set a timeline!

First Swim of the Season

I love the month of May in Canada. It finally signals the beginning of warm weather and we can start to think about using our pool again. Removing the pool tarp is a chore we look forward to completing.

Cider was within the fenced in pool area today while we were working. It seemed like a good way for her to enjoy the sunshine, have her big plastic satellite dish off for a while, and not be tempted to run around the back yard. She is still suppose to be taking it easy after all.

Well, I guess that dark green tarp looks like solid ground to our canine friends. My dog found out today that it most certainly is not ! The first swim of the season was had by Cider . . . and it was most definitely a mistake.

Here she is all dried off with the second bandage of the day. The "Enter Marineland" part of the towel and the matching blue bandage does seem rather appropriate now! It actually says Educational Center . . . but Enter Marineland is accurate too. Luckily Cider was not wearing her cone at the time of her surprise swim and was close enough to the side of the pool that my husband could grab her collar and direct her towards the stairs. Trying to swim on a tarp must feel like being in quicksand. I am glad we got her out quickly. No harm done : )

My Wee Scone Ballerina

This sweet little gal arrived in the mail yesterday. She is a Wee Scone Bear made by Diane Kennedy. Diane is an amazingly talented Teddy Bear Artist. This Ballerina Bear was made in 2007 and I missed winning her then. To my surprise, she was up for sale on eBay last week by her first owner.

I guess it was a dangerous afternoon of browsing, LOL.

I found her with only one hour left to go on the auction.

She had no bids at that point. I thought she must be mine : )

I bid a few seconds before the end of the auction and I won : )

I think she has such a pretty face. The lace tutu and cream velvet is adorable.

I am thrilled she is mine!

Edwardian Clothing and Millinery Brooches

Isn't the lace along the top of this Edwardian Camisole so pretty! If only I was still a size small, LOL. Ah well, those Victorian Gals were squished into their corsets . . . right? Some "young thing" shopping on Etsy will fit into one I hope : ) I think the delicate tops look great with jeans. They can be worn over a tank top ~ or perhaps a pretty dress form will be lucky to wear one.

I made many Millinery Brooches yesterday and will sell them with the vintage tops, blouses and camisoles I am posting in my Etsy Shop.

They sell brooch pins at Michael's so that made it pretty easy to adapt individual flowers into jewelry.

I love the pin tucks and Mother-of-Pearl buttons on these long sleeves.

I may have to pin the brooch in the center of this blouse, above the button holes. The sheer cotton is quite delicate. The flowers are relatively light, so that helps.

Millinery, Lace and Tea

I was busy playing with tea yesterday. I had all these wonderful beige and cream flowers that were crumpled, folded and in a heap. Lovely neutral shades. It was certainly worth a try to flatten them out. I figured a quick dip in some hot tea would soften them up and not hurt their colour. Once they were wet I could restore their shape. They filled a cookie tray and fluffed up wonderfully. My son was a little concerned, however. What are you baking mom?

The pretty shades of taupe and ivory look great with the Edwardian blouses I will be listing later this week. I may make a floral brooch or two for each blouse. Pretty embellishments.

I also finished a brown bear this week. The vintage wool sweater was a bright mint green that took on a much softer tone with a 10 minute soak in some hot tea. Tea is a great fixer!

I was inspired by Earth Day to finish this little bear in gentle shades of Brown and Green. I have named her Terra. Her vintage sweater is 100% wool. It is a recycled and re-dyed doll sweater. Her eyes are old fashioned boot buttons. Her mohair is also hand dyed and her necklace is made from Raffia. Her key hopefully holds the secret to a greener, happier planet. I will be listing her in my Etsy Shop later this week.

Cute Collie Print

I was helping out at an Auction today. I bought this cute print. I guess I am a sucker for Collie prints. There is always room for one more picture : )

Cider went for a check up last Thursday. The Vet didn't invite me into the "procedure room" this time. Gee . . . I wonder why? He did however give Cider a bright yellow bandage to match the yellow sweater I was wearing that day. Everyone in the waiting room thought that was cute.

We are told her leg is finally starting to heal nicely. Likely a few more weeks of "the cone" however. I can't say Cider is too impressed with that decision . She does have a few supervised hours every day without the cone . . . but can't seem to leave her bandage alone for more than a couple of hours. At least sleeping helps to pass the time.

We also go for car rides with the windows down . . . just a bit (as that cone catches a lot of air!). Cider seems to think that is a pretty good virtual walk. I think I'll go buy some new chew toys tomorrow so I can distract her from her bandage. New toys that don't encourage running are what we need. Time for a new Kong Chew toy I think. You can fill them with peanut butter for hours of fun : )

We will be having Easter Dinner on Sunday evening. My Hubby and children are in Toronto today at a 25th Wedding Anniversary Party. Cider is not up to traveling (a 5 hour drive each way) and the dog kennel just isn't an option right now. We will stay home and enjoy dinner and a chic flick with a girlfriend tonight. Girls night in : )

Finally finished a Teddy Bear

Well, yes, I am the slowest bear maker in the Universe. Probably because I never really call them done . . . I just keep changing how they look and what they wear. This guy was very hard to photograph because of his dark blue mohair, dark eyes and dark embroidery thread. This is his 3rd photo shoot, LOL.

The polka-dots make for a fun background I think and contrast nicely with his dark mohair. Thank you Nancy for the lovely box ~ Multi-purpose : )

I hope to have him listed in my Etsy Shop later this evening.

Cider's Progress

As many of you know my dog Cider had a pretty significant operation on March 19th. Although the operation itself was successful (cancerous lump removed) the healing process has been rather challenging. Canine legs are just too mobile . . . and very slow to heal. Even two weeks after the surgery, my dog's leg had not even begun to heal in one area. When I was feeling the most uncertain about what to do to help Cider . . . I happened to meet an individual at a pet store that suggested Manuka Honey Treatments. Isn't it amazing that you can go to one specific place, at one specific moment in time and bump into one person that has the information you need : )

I had never heard of Manuka Honey before, but you can read all about the medical bells and whistles here. It has been studied for over 20 years, with successful results in both humans and animals.

Needless to say I made an appointment to talk to my Vet immediately and he approved. Although my favourite Aussie Vet is currently on holidays in Australia and will not be back until May, I am encouraged by this New Zealand Honey. I think the theme of Cider's healing is certainly in the land Down Under : )

We also got lucky and found this amazing New Zealand Honey at a local Health Food Store, here in Canada. We did not have to wait for a mail order and could begin treating her with honey on her bandages right away. Yes, it is as simple as that.

I am happy to report that Cider's progress has been quite significant in just 5 days. I am no longer "fainting" at the site of her leg. She is also much more content and we can now see the solution ahead of us. Medicinal Honey . . . I call it Magic in a Jar : )

Pretty photos ~ New Mouse Pad

A little while ago Natasha did a post with a great suggestion . . . take a pretty photo and have the image made into a new mouse pad. Looking at my scruffy DELL blue-grey mouse pad with the missing corner (UG) I thought I should follow-up with that idea myself, LOL.

Here are some images I am thinking of using. The pink and white dresses were made by my Nana in 1966 when I was a wee little thing. My Nana did the smocking on the white dress by hand. I wore the pearls on my Wedding Day and the small Cameo was given to me by my Aunt Brenda on my 16th Birthday. The lovely blue dress is a vintage gem too. Maybe I'll save it for my first Grand-daughter (not needed for a least 10 years! Just in case the "Careful what you wish for Gods" are listening).

Maybe I'll use the angled picture, which is just about the right angle for viewing (when I am using the keyboard to the left). I'll look into online options tonight. I am sure our local photo shop at the grocery store can make me one.

Fairy Tale Gems ~ Rare 1920s Book

That's what happened when I saw this sweet little book.

It is an accordion style book that is only 4.5 inches tall with images and stories on both sides.

Superb Chromolithographs in perfect colours ~ framed with scrolls and roses.

Each picture is a miniature work of Art

I can imagine how thrilled a little girl in the 1920's would have been to own this treasure.

It folds up neatly, ties with a lace ribbon and fits in its original box. Just wonderful!

After doing some research on Rare Books I have found that is indeed a Scare book and even more rare with the original box. It is currently listed in my Ciderantiques ~ eBay

These wonderful lithographs can be digitized. Stunning prints for your mixed media creations.

Southern Belles ~ Yellow, Blue and Pink

I have three small Duchess Doll Corp. dolls from the 1950s that have been patiently waiting for their make-overs. Yesterday I completed the work and today I managed to finish the pictures. A nice sunny day always makes for better pictures : ) These gals are all ready for Spring!

The first is a cute Brunette with a yellow, pink and blue gown. She has the sweetest face!

I gave her hat feathers and vintage velvet pansies. She now holds a pretty blue bouquet of tiny Millinery and vintage ribbon. Her full crinoline makes her a true Southern Belle.

If you prefer pink and blue for your decor, this little doll is just the one for you!

~ I added the vintage white bells and gave her a Velvet Floral and Feathered Hat ~

This Southern Belle is pretty in Pink.

Her wispy feathers are original and the vintage flowers are my addition.

Cider Update: We went to the Vet this morning to get Cider's stitches out. She still has to wear the cone for at least 2 weeks (possibly 4 weeks). There is one area where it just needs more time to heal. Very slowly it seems. She is always worn out after a trip to the Vet and certainly slept well this afternoon. She has a pretty pink bandage to show off !

Mummy Update: I almost fainted at the Vet today !!!! Seriously . . .this is not an early April Fools joke. I thought I was fine . . . just watching and talking while the surgeon removed stitches and cleaned the wound etc, etc. I guess I watched more than I should. All of sudden I realized I needed to sit down . . . immediately. I was soooooo embarrassed and white as a ghost apparently. The problem was we were in the "Procedure Room" and there were no chairs to be found any where. Luckily, Cider needs 4 Vet Techs to help with her so called "procedures ." One of the many technicians ran and got me a stool to sit on. This worked for a few minutes. Then I was relocated to a real chair and given some water. My poor dog had to carry on without me. She was returned to me with a nice pink bandage and wagging her tail happily.

I guess I will never be a Vet Tech.

Etsy Shop Update

I have added several lovely table linens and lace table toppers to my Etsy Shop. This tablecloth is perfect for spring . . . I just love the butterfly and detailed embroidery along the edge.

I also have some amazing Antique Velvet for those of you that like to make your own creations out of vintage textiles. This velvet is scrumptious!

Cookies and Coffee

I ate them all! Yep, every single one! Fortunately for me my children don't appreciate almonds . . . tsk tsk . . . all the more for Mommy : ) My husband probably would have liked these wonderful cookies from Italy, but he doesn't really have a sweet tooth . . . and he is just too slow to beat me to the last one. So I enjoyed them all and finished the last one this morning with my coffee. I did stretch it out over the week . . . really I did.

I have moved a few more items from my website over to Etsy and hope to have a lot more listed in the next week or so.

My Vet says the worst is over for Cider and she just needs time to heal. She is on antibiotics to stop a small infection but other than that she is doing very well. Better than me I think . . . the Vet basically told me to "chill". So I am . . . .with cookies and coffee : )

Update: Boy she's FAST !!!

So I take my Vet's advice . . . just relax, chill, zen . I decide to have a long shower while sweet innocent pup sleeps on a nice flannel blanket. I come back down stairs to a laughing Hyena! Look Mom! . . . . no bandage . . . . isn't that neat : )

That blanket just got in the way of my mission . . . . honest!

Oh . . . I'm sorry Mom . . . I'll let you put a new bandage on immediately. I promise to leave it alone (Big brown eyes).

Well . . . maybe just one more time !

Easter Swap Package Arrived Today!

Thank you Monica at The White Bench . We are participating in an Easter Swap. My lovely pretties from Italy arrived today. I do believe I am officially spoiled : ). It was so nice to receive your package after my difficult week, last week. Your wrapping is so pretty I just had to take a few pictures before I opened everything . . . much to my son's dismay! Just open them . . . he encouraged. Open the square one first! (radar for chocolate, LOL).

Well . . . you have to open the card first I told him . . . . handmade with bunnies, glitter and vintage papers . . . so pretty! Must get my camera . . . . more delay, LOL.

Even the ribbon is adorable . . . Pretties for You !

The Wreath is Amazing Monica ~ I can enjoy it this Spring and all Summer!

The Easter Egg is gorgeous with cream lace and a realistic birdie.

I agree it can be enjoyed all year long.

Casey and Cider

Yep, that's Cider on the family room couch. . . . ah well it's a brown sofa, LOL. Cider does have her own doggy chair but she can't curl up very well right now. Stretching out is better. Cider's leg is very bald from surgery, but her fur will grow back in soon enough. So far we have been able to avoid the lamp shade collar. She really didn't like it and started to try and scratch it off with her hind legs . . . not good. We bandage her leg at night instead and she leaves it alone. So far so good. I'll sleep on the couch until the stitches are out to make sure she doesn't get into mischief. She'll have to make do with the dog mat at night, LOL. The jingling of her tags wakes me up when she is moving around so I should be able to stop her from removing the bandage.

My daughter is doing fine too after her tooth surgery, but didn't want to be photographed all puffy. Can't really blame her! Her friends have dropped by with gifts and well wishes, which is keeping her spirits up.

Casey 1989 ~ 2009

Sweet ol' Casey ~ our 20 year old cat ~ left us yesterday . . . on the First Day of Spring, 2009. He was two decades old. I can picture him leaping into heaven with a youthful pounce!

This is a Happy post and a Tribute for an amazing cat that really did think he was a dog and every one's Best Friend ~ Even if it was a small dog! He out smarted all the dogs in our neighborhood. One particular small yappy thing (that is always permitted to wander by its owner) used to chase Casey a fair bit until one day . . . Casey ran into our back yard with the yappy fur-ball in hot pursuit. Casey knew that Cider just happened to be out enjoying our new deck. It was like Casey was saying "come meet my friend" with a grin of satisfaction. Needless to say . . .FuFu gave Casey a lot more respect after that.

I adopted Casey when he was one year old, from the Toronto Humane Society. It was the week before Valentine's Day and the week before I got engaged! It was just Casey and I way back then. I named him "Casey" (as in Case things out) because he was always into things and always checking things out. He always wore an ID tag with my phone number. Some of my favorite memories:

The inspector . . . . Do these pool guys know what they are doing?

Why is there so much pink stuff in the water?

Casey inspected everything . In his younger days, when we lived in Toronto, Casey was well known in the neighborhood. He liked to sit in the Kayak on the roof of my mom's car (he almost went for a drive a few times but he always popped up just in time).

Then there was the Real Estate Agent at the nearby model home that phoned and said "Casey has spent the night on the King size bed in the Master Suite and should really go home now . . . as they would be opening soon."

Or the Principal at the local Catholic School that said "he keeps following the children to school and pays particular attention to the cross walk. "

When we lived near a ravine in Toronto, a neighbor told me he saw Casey outrun and escape being caught by a fox when he scaled the six foot chain link fence around the baseball field and then jumped down into the ball diamond for safety. Once safely protected by the fence, he casually waited for the fox to leave!

He followed me to the subway one winter day in the early 1990's for several city blocks. He was hiding and running from snow bank to snow bank on the opposite side of the road. I was glad I spotted him just before I got to the subway entrance! I had to go all the way home and then back to the subway and explain to my boss why I was so late that day.

He was also great with kids! Thanks, but I'll wait to have breakfast when "my" girl wakes up.

I'd help husk that corn if I could, LOL.

He needed to have an eye removed many years ago. People thought I was silly spending money on a 13 year old cat. He lived until 20 . . . so we showed them !

He was a compassionate cat. He visited the lady next door every day last summer when she was having a very difficult few months. He seemed to know that she needed his daily visit. She would call and let me know where he was.

These are just a few of the stories that come to mind when I think of this wonderful cat.

Casey is like the Marley of the cat world : ) I will miss him xoxoxxo

Things Happen in Three's . . .

My Favorite Rocks

Life can certainly bulk up in threes. My daughter has surgery today to remove a misplaced tooth that happens to be hiding up above her two front teeth. It was discovered on X-ray and will harm the roots of her adult teeth if it stays. Such a tooth is nicknamed a "Unicorn Tooth" by Dentists. My daughter will be losing her Unicorn status at 11:15am today. She is nervous but her Best Friend made her some good luck jewelry yesterday. How sweet is that!

Cider and I obtained a second opinion yesterday. We met with the most wonderful Aussie Vet Specialist who is now living in Canada. I think I love Aussie's : ). He is considered one of the best Surgical Oncologist's (Cancer surgeons) the world has to offer. I am very impressed with him and so happy he is within an hour drive from our home. Thank you Australia : ) Cider didn't make a fuss at all (which she often does at the Vet). She sat quietly on the floor during her exam. Maybe she liked the Aussie accent, LOL. Dr. Liptak fit Cider's surgery in within 24 hours of her consultation and he has an 80% success rate for this type of surgery (without chemo or radiation). If we fall in the 20% (surface cancer on her leg grows back) the surgery can be repeated which will still give my lovely dog many more years. The solution I wanted without the $10,000 price tag the first specialist quoted.

Cider's surgery is also today. We have gone from cancelled surgery by the General Vet to full speed ahead with the specialist. We would not have chosen today as the day, but we are happy to be made a priority. The specialist goes away for a full month next week, so we needed to accept the last available spot on his schedule. My husband took Cider to the Vet Hospital at 7:00am this morning. She will likely stay for 24 hours.

Our third pending Hospital visit relates to our 20 year old cat Casey. He is struggling. I think (well . . . I know) it is his time. I was hoping he would peacefully pass away in his sleep but realize that life isn't usually that simple. We are lucky to have enjoyed him for two full decades. That is quite unusual for a male cat. He was my cat before I got married or had children. I need to be his friend when he needs me most, as difficult as they may be. He has been a perfect pet.

Easter Swap ~ Off to Italy!

I am in an Easter Swap with Monica at The White Bench . Since Monica lives in Italy and I live in Canada I thought I should mail my package early. It will be in the mail today!

I am happy with how my Easter goodies came together to make a pretty display. This post is a "spoiler" so if you want your package contents to be a surprise Ms. Monica . . . you shouldn't scroll down any further.

I know Monica loves Blue and White so I tried to include these colors.

I used raised floral lace instead of a basket, so it looks like the rabbits are in a garden.

Both bunnies are holding blue flowers.

The Easter Egg is decorated with Blue and White Millinery

Monica did mention she is on a diet and did not want any chocolate. I think Easter and Christmas should be the official cheat on your diet days! . . . . so I did include two ever-so-tiny chocolate bunnies.

I added a sheer white vintage hanky with blue embroidery and the cutest mini clothes-peg with felt petals and a button daisy.

Doggy update for those following Cider's progress. Cider saw a Veterinary Oncologist (cancer expert) on Friday. These specialty hospitals are not for the faint of heart or pocket-book! We haven't even met with the surgeon yet, but it is $157.00 per consultation. I was advised that the surgery will only happen after my dog completes the mandatory pre-op work: totaling $1300.00 on X-rays, blood work and yet another biopsy. I am becoming quite skeptical about specialists and will be meeting with my local vet again on Monday. I had hoped for at least 3 more years of pain free health for my dog and was hoping that could be obtained for under $1,500.00.

The complete range of expenses (if I went for the most expensive option, offered by the Oncologist) is a whopping $10,000.00. Did you fall over yet? I did. I don't think I heard much more after that. This high end option would include surgery and a five week stay for 25 Chemo treatments at Ontario's Veterinary College or equivalent in New York State. Needless to say that is beyond my budget and also beyond what I am willing to contemplate for my dog. I know she would likely bite someone during that month ordeal and quite frankly so might I : ( Sooo . . . . we are still happy that our dog is oblivious to her situation and is currently in no pain. We will take it one day at a time. The most realistic option may be no surgery with growth inhibitor medication that aims to keep things the same. Status quo would be just fine : )

Somethin's Up . . .

A rather blurry photo . . . took one click and off we went. Cider is at the vet today getting a lump (on her left leg) removed. They may keep her there until this evening. I'll update more later.

Cider says . . . .Not today!!!

as she rolls around and plays ~ making doggy snow angels.

To make a long story short, our Vet scheduled Cider's surgery with the most Senior Vet at the clinic who had not seen our dog. This Vet in turn thought it would be best if Cider saw a Specialist at an Animal Hospital with an Oncology Department. So . . . surgery was cancelled today and we were given the glossy brochure instead. Cider has a "get-out-of-vet" pass today.

Etsy vs. Website

Well, I did a test run for almost a year. I had both an Etsy Shop and a Website. I found it hard to keep both updated regularly. It was just a matter of time before I picked one over the other. I was still thinking maybe I should keep my website . . .and then a new customer bought 16 items from my Etsy shop yesterday. Thank you very much by the way! I'll take that as a sign, LOL. Etsy wins!

It is certainly demanding having multiple stores. Listing on Etsy with the odd eBay listing seems to work well for me.

Tomorrow I will be transferring my website inventory over to Etsy.

I think these vintage dresses will do well there.

On another note . . . this will be a busy week. My dog Cider will be having her leg operation on Tuesday morning at 8:00am. I am more worried about the after-care than the surgery. I hope she leaves the stitches alone.

My niece is having her wisdom teeth pulled on Thursday morning. She is attending a local University (her family is in New Brunswick) so I will be her designated driver and caregiver afterwards. I joked that she and Cider can share the couch together (chipmunk-cheeks and lampshade-head recovering together). Stay tuned!

Geocaching around the World !

Do any of you gals/guys in Blogland look for geocache treasures? We as a family bought a GPS about a year ago and have been having a great time looking for treasures ever since. People play all around the world. You can register at geocaching.com . It is a lot of fun !!!!

We helped move this lovely gecko coin from Ontario to Florida. This official geocache coin (or travel bug) is on a mission to make it to New Zealand. It will be interesting to see how long it takes him to hop across America (being moved from site to site by fellow geocachers). I am guessing he will work his way across the USA to California, Hawaii and then Australia and N.Z. He had been stuck in Ontario for months, so we decided to move him to a more southern location, during our vacation. Hint: he is in a geocache hiding spot near Marineland.

Anyways, we thought we would purchase a similar coin (only $8) and start another gecko on a similar mission. Perhaps I will send my Gecko to Australia. Any suggestions for a location? Any geocache families out there that want him sent your way? I am looking for ideas : )

St. Augustine, Florida

This is the beach in front of Marineland, which is just south 0f St. Augustine, Florida. It is absolutely gorgeous! We noticed that you can rent beach houses and we will certainly keep that idea tucked away for future reference. You could walk for miles and miles!

Marineland is right beside the ocean and the pool looks like it blends in with the horizon.

This little gal was very friendly and she certainly tried to win my daughter over . . . peaking over the glass to say hello and inviting her in for a swim. Oh . . . come 'on !!!! she seemed to say.

The hands on the hips say it all . . . . not gunna-do-it.

Ah well . . . maybe some other time you'll change your mind.

OK then, I'll play will your Mom and brother . . .

The football was very easy for her to grab and return !

Obama visits the Byward Market

Well I guess I should have gone to the market today! Look who was buying cookies and local pastries. President Obama is said to have joked "they also have stuff in Chicago that will thicken the arteries." He bought the red Maple Leaf cookies for his daughters and also shopped briefly for a few other souvenirs. Still making time to be a Dad ~ good for him!

After meeting with the Prime Minister of Canada (his first foreign visit) the President's motorcade stopped at the Byward Market, a Farmers Market in the heart of downtown Ottawa. Obama's arrival surprised and stunned shoppers, many of whom crowded around the new President, shook his hand and posed for photos.
